Doulas

Some women feel the need to pay a person to act as a birth attendant or supporter, in addition to their husband, partner, mother, sister, friend and the professional midwives at Frances Perry House.

In our experience some of these Doulas and even independent midwives, act in a confrontational manner and seem to think their role is to "protect" a woman from interventions forced upon her by medical staff. We are very happy for you to have your own support people present during labour and delivery, but sincerely hope that by the time your baby is due you feel able to trust us enough to give you the appropriate advice and support.

If you do feel the need to have such a paid helper please understand that they are there to help you and not to give medical advice (for which they are not trained), or question our judgement.
